Love is a verb. I've seen that said elsewhere, and its truth has always struck me. The weakness of romance as genre is that it's typically a noun people just flop into with no effort of their own. Which isn't so bad unless you've made love the central theme of your serious narrative.The author goes on and on about love as a passive experience. Unfortunately, the only loving thing- you know, actually working at looking after someone you care about- anyone really does in any of this is the mother of the lead. And that's done with so little visible effort and in such an unrealistic way that it comes off as a contrivance. The mother hides her pain at betrayal and dishonesty from someone she loved and trusted in a way that's unbelievably effective. It makes the father's betrayal not need any correcting. He doesn't need to _do_ anything for forgiveness.But honestly, that's how everyone is. The feel things, they say sorry, but no one really does anything to actually make amends. We never address what the father's actions show. Sure he _felt_ love. But do it? Even the lead's memories of him as a family member don't show him being more than pleasant company. He never puts in the work as a husband or father. When he wants closeness, he just selfishly imposes on his daughter, never bothering to in anyway address her emotional needs. And his version of events shows that. It's all about his feelings. Sure he admits mistakes, but he doesn't correct them. He just feels bad, and expects his daughter to treat him in a way that makes that stop.But worst of all, the author seems to think enabling this behavior is wise, not toxic. It's not good to hold a grudge, but it's also not good to love as a verb someone who simply enjoys it as noun until they get bored. The mother's words of advice to the lead ring false, because they present a false dichotomy. Just because it's worth it to have loved someone doesn't mean they were worthy of that love. And if they are as careless with your family's love as the father was, they aren't.Also, the final page or so really drives this problem home. It's a glaring plot hole. The protagonist will let herself fall into love like hole, but do _zero_ to help the person she's falling in love with address a problem only she knows about, including informing people who could help. I get what point the author was trying to make, but that wasn't a good execution.Professional level writing and a solid premise, but I found how it treated love more toxic than beautiful in how dishonest it was about work, growth, consequences, and redemption.
